Canisius' Division I ACHA hockey team gives students the opportunity to compete against top competition in a nationally recognized college hockey league without being chained to the rigors of an NCAA team. Playing on the Griffs' ACHA team allows student-athletes to focus on academics and work part-time jobs while playing a 35-game season and practicing three times a week. The team consists of approximately 25 of the top high school and junior players from US and Canada. Many are recruited, but several players each year make the team through an open tryout during the first week of classes. Funding for team equipment, buses and hotels for road trips and tournaments come from the school's athletic department, player dues and fundraising. Road trips have extended as far east as Annapolis, Md., and far south as Alabama, and as far west as Las Vegas, NV. Canisius made the jump to the ACHA's top division in 2010.The American Collegiate Hockey Association was founded in 1991 and has built to 446 teams across three divisions in both men's and women's competition and reaches every state but Hawaii. A national championship is held in each division every year for qualifying teams. All ACHA teams are members of USA Hockey.
